This beautiful horse was found in a Henry County, Georgia pasture. He was with many other horses, all of the others were healthier and younger. "Bones" as he has now been named is older and he needed grain, vitamins, and veterinary care.
The owner was asked if he would donate the horse to the Hoof Beats Horse Club of Henry County, he unfortunately said that he needed to be paid something for the horse and that he would take $200.00 for him.
Two members of our club, Taylor Buice (age 16) and Jonni Taylor (age 14) decided to do what they could to save this horse.
"Bones" came to live at Patterson Farm, where several 4-H members board their horses.
Brandon Patterson has allowed us to board him for free.
We immediately had the vet out to check "Bones", he was given his immunizations, de-wormed, had blood drawn for tests, had his teeth floated and had one decayed tooth pulled.
The farrier also came out and trimmed his hooves, although they weren't in very bad shape.
"Bones" is truly one of the most pleasant horses I have ever met. He has the sweetest eyes and he loves attention.

Jonni and Taylor are both actively involved in 4-H and they are monitoring his progress and tracking his improvements to use in their 4-H DPA Project.
They see this as a great opportunity to learn about the special needs of an older horse. At the stable where they board their own horses are several older horses, with the oldest being 42.
A horse used to be considered old at 13 or 14 years old, but in reality they have a life-span of much more than that. "Bones" is much younger than that at a mere 25.
